Ruby Irene (Quinton) Gooden

October 1, 1932 — January 26, 2024

Ruby Irene Gooden, born on October 1, 1932, in Quinton, Oklahoma, was a beacon of kindness and a pillar of her community. She passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and an unwavering dedication to her family and friends.

Ruby's early life in Quinton shaped her into the person we all came to love. She was the embodiment of the values instilled in her by her late parents, Virgil and Irene Quinton. Her life was further enriched by her marriage to Bennie Mack Gooden, who preceded her in death, as did her brothers, Jack and Clifford Quinton. She is survived by a daughter, Trix Gooden of Dewar, her son, Dennis Gooden of Henryetta, her cherished thirteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, her sister, Dorothy Galassini, two brothers Joe Quinton of Medicine Park, Oklahoma and Harold Quinton and wife Carole of Albuquerque, New Mexico and a multitude of friends and relatives who felt the warmth of her presence.

A proud graduate of Dewar High School, Ruby's commitment to education never waned. She spent many years as a substitute teacher for both Dewar and Henryetta schools, where she was known for her uncanny ability to remember each student by name. Her involvement with young people did not stop at the classroom door; Ruby extended her nurturing spirit to the sports fields, where she coached girls' softball and basketball, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless young athletes.

Ruby's work history included various retail positions in Henryetta, where she was known for her friendly demeanor and genuine care for customers and colleagues alike. She was also a devoted member of the Dewar First Baptist Church, where her faith and dedication to service shone brightly.

Beyond her professional and spiritual life, Ruby was a force to be reckoned with in the sporting arena. She was not only the Chairman of the Henryetta Labor Day celebration for many years but also an enthusiastic participant in the Senior Olympics, competing in shot put and basketball. Her prowess on the court was legendary, and she was always eager to share her skills with the younger generation, mentoring them with patience and joy.

Ruby's love for Dewar sports was unparalleled. She was the ultimate fan, known for her station wagons full of excited kids heading to support their teams at various events. Her voice was a familiar cheer in the stands, encouraging every player with heartfelt enthusiasm.

Her community service extended to her long-standing membership in the Dewar Rebekah Lodge, where she worked tirelessly to promote the values of friendship, love, and truth. Ruby was a woman who lived by example, showing through her actions what it means to be kind, friendly, and selfless. Ruby was awarded Henryettan of the Year in 2008 for her tireless work in the community.

As we remember Ruby Irene Gooden, we celebrate a life that was lived with purpose and joy. Her impact on her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched will continue to resonate. While we mourn her passing, we also rejoice in the knowledge that her legacy will live on through the love she shared and the community she helped build.
