George Hill

March 20, 1948 — April 18, 2024

George Hill, a cherished member of the Henryetta, Oklahoma community, passed away on April 18, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on March 20, 1948, in Henryetta, Oklahoma to Freeman Hill and Walter and Alice (Soweka) Tulsa, George's roots ran deep in the town he called home.

George's ties to his community were strong and enduring. He attended Ryal and Graham schools, where his exceptional skills on the basketball court earned him the nickname "Michael Jordan" among his peers. After completing his education, George enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam Era.

On March 21, 1981, George married the love of his life, Shirley Anna, in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Together, they built a life centered around their home in Henryetta. George dedicated himself to his work as a welder, contributing his skills to General Steel until his retirement.

A man of faith, George was a member of the Ryal Community Baptist Church, finding solace and community within its walls. His greatest joy, however, came from time spent with his beloved family, particularly his grandchildren, who brought light and laughter into his life.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman Hill and Walter and Alice Tulsa, his daughter Georgina Hill, his brother Pastor John Tulsa, his uncles Jacob, Bunnie, and Robert Soweka, and his aunts Lillie Scott and Judy Mae Asbury.

He is survived by his devoted wife Shirley Hill, their sons Chad Hill of the home and Jason Soweka and wife Kim of the Wilson Community, and daughter Alethea Soweka of Tulsa, Oklahoma. George is also remembered fondly by his brothers Lewis Tulsa of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and Harry Tulsa of Henryetta, Oklahoma, and his sisters Liz Jones of Dewar, Oklahoma, and Bonnie Soweka of Henryetta, Oklahoma.

In addition to his immediate family, George leaves behind sisters-in-law Loretha Bohanan of Eagletown, Oklahoma, Genevieve Tulsa of Henryetta, Oklahoma, Sylvia Tulsa of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and Gwen Kelley of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Arma Austin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Donna Anna of Broken Bow, Oklahoma and a brother-in-law, Noel Sanders of McAlester, Oklahoma. His legacy is further enriched by eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will carry his memory forward with love and reverence.
