Robert Gene Rainwater

November 4, 1941 — January 13, 2024

Robert Gene Rainwater, affectionately known as "Cowboy General" to his friends and loved ones, rode off into the sunset on January 13, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on November 4, 1941, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to Seaburn and Goldamae (Wood) Rainwater, Robert was a man whose presence was as commanding as the Oklahoma plains he so dearly loved. His final days were spent surrounded by the warmth and love of his family in Checotah, Oklahoma.

Robert's early years were spent in Council Hill, where he graduated from the local high school. His passion for creativity led him to attend OSU Okmulgee, where he not only honed his artistic skills but also shared his knowledge as an instructor in Art and Graphic Design. His career path took a turn towards the advertising industry, where he worked as a designer before venturing out as an entrepreneur. His spirit of independence shone through when he established Rainwater Communications in Phoenix, Arizona, a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Family was the cornerstone of Robert's life. He was a devoted son, a loving father, and a cherished brother. His legacy continues through his son, Rob Rainwater, Jr. and wife Dawn of Checotah, Oklahoma; his daughter, Danielle Rainwater of Arizona; his second wife, Lois Rainwater of Arizona; his sister, Nina Hart of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and his brother, Jim Rainwater of Florida. His grandchildren, Robert Rainwater, III and wife Nicole of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Cody Rainwater and Andrea of Checotah, Oklahoma, Tristan Rainwater and Heather Skaggs of Checotah, Oklahoma, Dakota Rainwater of Checotah, Oklahoma, and Abigail Yang of Stillwater, Oklahoma, along with three great-grandchildren and one on the way, will forever hold dear the memories and lessons he imparted.

Robert was a man of the land, with a love for the outdoors that was as vast as the skies he lived under. An avid member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), he was not only a gun enthusiast but also a staunch advocate for the rights and traditions that he believed in. His passion for horseback riding was more than a hobby; it was a way of life that kept him connected to his roots and the heritage of the Old West.

His artistic soul found expression in his appreciation for Southwestern art, a genre that reflected the depth and color of his own life. Robert was a true "Old Fashioned Cowboy," a title that he wore with pride and humility. His was a life lived with a strong sense of purpose, a deep respect for the past, and an unwavering commitment to the values he held dear.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert leaves behind a legacy of strength, integrity, and love. His was a life that touched many, from the students he taught to the colleagues he worked with, and the family he adored. His stories, his laughter, and his wisdom will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid farewell to Robert Gene Rainwater, we celebrate a life that was as rich and enduring as the legacy he leaves behind. His journey on this earth may have come to an end, but his spirit will continue to ride on in the hearts of those who loved him. His memory will be cherished, his contributions to his community and family will be honored, and his life will be remembered as one of purpose and passion.

In the quiet moments when the sun dips below the horizon and the stars begin to twinkle in the Oklahoma sky, we will think of Robert and smile, knowing that he is watching over us, his spirit as free and untamed as the land he loved so much. Rest in peace, Cowboy General. Your ride has been a grand one.
