Purser Edward “Eddie” Newman, Jr., 76, of Henryetta, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2018. He was born on May 26, 1942, in McComb, Mississippi, to the late Purser Edward “Bilbo” Newman, Sr., and Joy (Roberts) Patman. Eddie graduated in 1960 from the Oklahoma Military Academy, where he was a member of DeMolay and the Drill Team. He attended Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University, and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Before relocating with his family to his wife’s hometown of Henryetta in 1976, Eddie was active in the Tulsa heavy equipment, construction and real estate industries. Prior to his retirement in 2014, he was involved with multiple Henryetta businesses, including Burnett Hardware, Burnett Heating & Air, and Easy Pawn, and participated in a number of community organizations, including Rotary, the Elks Lodge, Boy Scouts and the Green Country Soccer Association.
Eddie was well-known for his genial nature and friendly banter. He enjoyed warm connections and interactions with others wherever he went. He also took great pleasure in listening to, playing and singing old time rock-and-roll music. However, his greatest passion was his family.
Eddie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan (Burnett) Newman; children, Purser Edward “Eddie” Newman, III, and wife Stephanie of Edmond, and Scott Newman and wife Anne of Jenks; and grandchildren, Bailey Newman, Timothy Newman, Abby Newman and William Newman.
The family is grateful for all of those who extended care and kindness to Eddie over the past several months, as well as the outpouring of sympathies for his loss.
A funeral service will be held in Eddie’s honor on Friday, October 12, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Henryetta at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Kyle Kiner officiating. Interment will follow in Westlawn Cemetery under direction of Integrity Funeral Service.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or any charity of choice in Eddie’s name.
