Lavender isn't as showy as red or as bold as purple. It's a humble, sincere, bashful color, but just as stunning. That was Aunt Mary. And perhaps that's why she loved it. She will be with me for the rest of my life. Love, Trula

The first thing Aunt Mary taught me was how to be the best sister I could be. One time she said to me, "If anything happened to your mother, it would kill me." Her tears confirmed her passion and sincerity. She would have died for her sisters, and I hope that my love can compare.
The next thing Aunt Mary taught me was how to be wonderful aunt. When we were young, my sisters and I raved about Aunt Mary. She was so gentle and compassionate to us. Renee reminded me of the time that she "rescued" us from "Mean Aunt Amy." She was our safe place. She was our touchstone. She was our second mother. I aspire to be that kind of aunt every day.
The final thing Aunt Mary taught me was how to be a better person. She cared about people. She cared about people who didn't deserve her kindness. She cared about people to the detriment of her own self. She couldn't help it. I know that I will never be able to surpass that tenderness and devotion. Not many will. But I can try.
They say that those closest to a person are the last to recognize their genius. I say that those closest to a person are the last to recognize how extraordinary they are. But my eyes have always been opened. I saw it. I saw it in Aunt Mary, just as I see it in my mother and my sisters. There are only so many exceptionally kind people on this planet. So when my Aunt Mary died, the earth sighed. The trees bent over slightly more. The sky clouded up in protest. The oceans flattened. She has left us all with a legacy to uphold--that of extraordinary wife, mother, aunt, sister, and friend. Good luck to us.
