Charles was one of my favorite professors. I was largely his influence on me to pursue a history major and a philosophy and religion minor at Southern Arkansas University. The academic community here will miss him greatly! I was personally crestfallen at the news of his passing.

Doctor Keller was a good man and a valued friend, teacher, and advisor. I was a student of his at Southern Arkansas University and he was one of the main reasons why I went to school there. He made history fun and he introduced me to Asian history and culture. This allowed me to gain better understanding of the world.

He was always available to talk to and he gave me advice when I needed it. I learned alot from him and he was not only an excellent professor but a trusted friend as well. He was a tremendous influence on me and I will never forget that.

He will be missed by all those he influenced at Southern Arkansas University.

哀悼柯老师(Dr. Charles Keller)千古

温文尔雅泰西一儒曾与共创亚洲研究小专业几回同事几回同游
直言不讳刚正之士常呼美国第二激励大学生既爱母国亦爱妻国

Charles told me when we met for the first time 12 years ago that he is called in Chinese 柯老师(Professor Keller). I paid him a visit to his office because I heard that he was a China scholar. I saw on his bookshelves a copy of “A Short History of Chinese Philosophy” by Dr. Yu-lan Feng. We did not talk about philosophy that day. But much later he did tell me about who was his favorite modern Chinese prose writer, in one of those parties we had at our place, I think. I also learned that his wife is ethnic Chinese and it turned out that she and I have the same last name. So, in the old ways, Charles is like a son-in-law of our clan!

In the couplet I just composed above, I said on the first line that he is as mild and gentle as a Confucian in his manner, which is my true impression of him. Charles and we (me and my wife) worked together to have created Asian Studies Minor at SAU. We had several meetings, various activities and events including food sampling, poetry reading, field trips, etc.

On the second line, I said that Charles is outspoken and dauntless, which I heard about on campus and also eye-witnessed a couple of time during faculty meetings.
I also said that he acclaimed ironically in class “Yeah! We are number two!” by which he meant to tell his students that China was going to be the number one! In the last part of the second verse I said that he loved his motherland and his wifeland, which is my speculation. I believe he did. I think a considerable part of Charles is identified with Chinese culture.

Charles has some interesting comments regarding American culture and Chinese culture, which I don’t specify.

Charles had class in the building where I am so we ran into each other once in a while. Last time I saw him on the hallway in Wilson Hall, I think we talked for about 5 minutes, mainly because I was kinda “talkative,” because I liked chatting with him. As always, he was as gentle as a traditional Confucian scholar.

柯老师,您安息吧!
